ABSTRACT

There are some unexpected scenes that no one planned. These unintended scenes are the fragments of conflicting human interests and desires. Discovering and gazing at those abandoned scenes are the act of reflecting on the points where human desires failed to come to fruition.

I focused on the city’s major characteristics, which is its temporary nature, through the images of redevelopment projects going on in Seoul. This was the process of dissolving humanity’s residential space and destroying local communities. (#01-06)

I took the pictures of places where massacre and sacrifices took place in the modern history of Korea and Japan. I made records of Jeju island and Okinawa, which share the history of tragedy. I took the shots of Miryang and Fukushima, which also share the agony of suffering from nuclear power plant issues. (#07-13)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Residents who lost their homes due to New town redevelopment projects, the former residents of submerged districts, people who were displaced because of the construction of nuclear power plants, evicted farmers due to newly-built US bases… All the displaced people gathered in a new small area created by the government.

Those towns were something thoroughly planned – they always have been created in a designated time and area. People wanted a new house that they have dreamed of, in exchange for their lost homes. So they wanted realize their dreams on the new ground. Well-organized towns were created and they were isolated from the outside by asphalt pavements and wired fences. In that new grid, their dream houses started to appear. I would like to take stock of values such as a nation, individuals, towns, development, desire and conviction, observing and recording the profound mystery and bittersweet scenes of those towns.

This project comprises collected photos of old towns with residents and the photos of new towns that are taken by the displaced. The process of their settlement will be recorded through interview clips. And the outcomes will be published and exhibited.
