Abstract of the accomplished photographic work
Day by Day is a project that explores the deep bond between humans and nature in the evocative landscapes of the Emilian Apennines. It tells the stories of individuals whose connection to the land goes beyond mere existence, highlighting the intrinsic spirituality of human harmony with nature. This region stands out for its strong cultural heritage, rooted in the slow rhythms of the mountainous environment and long-established mutualistic networks. These elements not only shape the identity of local communities but also offer valuable insights for a broader audience, extending to cities and lowlands. The relationship between humans and nature, both strong and fragile, has endured over centuries through activities that keep these territories alive. This project maps faces and places, creating a living representation of the region. It unfolds as a journey that captures the enduring connection between people and nature, showcasing the richness and diversity of this mountainous land.
Description of the project you intend to pursue through the Prize
Searching for Heritage (2015–Ong) is a visual exploration of the Moroccan landscape and its influence on identity and belonging. Morocco’s scenery reflects the tension between tradition and modernity, from rapidly expanding cities to vast rural areas. The Mediterranean coastline represents both a symbolic and physical border, shaping aspirations and movement.
Using a visual language, this project investigates how the landscape influences personal and collective narratives. It questions the emotional connection to a homeland that feels both familiar and distant, tracing the impact of geography on those who stay and those who leave. This work is also a personal inquiry into my roots, an attempt to capture the images of a lost country to be rediscovered. The book will blend landscapes and portraits with a documentary photography approach, enriched with personal reflections, offering a layered perspective on the ever-changing Moroccan landscape and its role in shaping cultural identity.
